Scanning the Dallas/Fort Worth Area
Fire Department Unit Numbering
Here's
some information that you'll find handy if you're a fire buff. Many cities(but not
all) are going to a unified unit numbering system for easier communications,
especially on mutual aid calls. The unit numbers consists of 4 digits like
"M151", "E202", etc.
First Digit =
Unit Type (see below)
Second and Third Digit = City
Last Digit = Sequential Unit Number
Unit Types (First
Digit)
A=Air, B=Brush, C=Chief (or other officers), E=Engine, I=Investigator,
L=Ladder, M=Medic, Q=Quint, T=Truck. A Quint is a basically an engine with an
aerial platform. A Ladder usually doesn't have the platform or bucket. Over the
air you'll hear the word spoken, but the dispatchers just enter the
abbreviation followed by the digits described below.
Many of these have been submitted by Scanning the Dallas/Fort Worth Area visitors(A BIG THANK YOU TO THEM), or I have gotten them from various scanning resources.
